New Mexico has nine ski resorts, largely located in the north central area of the state. All of the ski areas are located in the Rocky Mountain range that traverses through the central axis of the state. Due to the dry conditions of the area, there is limited snow making capabilities. As a result, the ski season is especially vulnerable to temperature variations. Usually, the ski season in New Mexico lasts from late November through early April. The average annual snowfall ranges from around 180 to 300 inches.

One of the largest resorts in the State is Ski Apache, located three hours southeast of Albuquerque. There are 55 trails open to both skiers and snowboarders, with terrains for an array of levels: 20% beginner, 35% intermediate and 45% advanced. There is also a specialized terrain park. Ski Apache has lodging on site of the resort, with a variety of dining options and gambling. Hotels, condos, cabins and lodges are also available in the surrounding area.

Taos Ski Resort New Mexico

The Taos ski resort is the largest ski resort is New Mexico. The resort is located three hours north of Albuquerque. The resort offers a unique juxtaposition between an Alpine Swiss resort and the local customs of the Hispanic and Pueblo Indian cultures. The ski area has 110 runs, with the full range of terrains available: 24% beginner, 25% intermediate, 31% advanced and 20% expert. There is also a terrain park, even though no snowboarding is allowed at the resort. The highest point of the ski area is Kachina peak. The Village in the Taos Valley, at the base of the mountain, offers a wide variety of cozy lodges, cabins, chalets and condos to suite every need. There is also a wide array of real estate and lodging choices in the surrounding area.

A full range of dining is available both on and off the slopes. Cafeterias, bars and restaurants are available for all variety of vacation groups. There are also ski schools and camps available at the resort. Instruction is largely focused on beginner skiers, though more advanced instruction is also available. Childcare is available for children ages 6 months to 3 years old. All day ski classes for children 3 to 15 years old are also available.
