Arizona Ski Resorts
There are four ski resorts in Arizona. The largest resort is the Sunrise ski resort. Another popular ski resort is the Arizona Snowbowl. The winter season starts in December and continues through April, though the actual dates the slopes are open depends on the amount of snowfall. The average snowfall ranges from about 180 to 260 inches. Arizona offers convenient and largely gentle slopes. The majority of ski resorts in this state offer mainly beginner and intermediate grade terrain. The larger skiing areas do have ski areas for more advanced skiers. Family fun is a common feature of ski resorts in Arizona, offering childcare, ski classes and activities. Arizona ski resorts are generally open year round. Summer activities include hiking, sightseeing tours on the lift, mountain biking and horseback riding. Arizona Snowbowl is located about seven miles north of Flagstaff. The resort is situated on the San Francisco Peaks in the Rock Mountain range. The Snowbowl features 32 runs: 37% beginner, 42% intermediate and 21% advanced. The development of the Arizona Snowbowl has a history of controversy. Local Indian tribes, the Hopi and the Navajo, protested the resort development, since the development of the mountain would endanger their religious freedom. Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley resort is located on Mount Lemmon, in the Santa Catalina Mountain range. It is here that the southernmost ski resort in the continental US is located. Even in winter, the temperature in the area is relatively mild, allowing one to ski in a sweater. The resort has 18 runs with terrain difficulties ranging from 30% beginner, 50% intermediate and 20% advanced. Elk Ridge Ski Area, formerly known as the Williams ski area, is located 30 miles west of Flagstaff. It is family oriented and has slopes available for skiers, snowboarding and tubing.
Sunrise Ski Resort In Arizona
Sunrise ski resort is located in the White Mountains, along the eastern region of the state. The slopes are located over three mountains: Sunrise Peak, Apache Peak and Cyclone Circle. The resort is owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. It is the largest ski area in Arizona, located 200 miles east from Phoenix. There are a total of 65 runs; 37% for beginners, 42% for intermediate and 21% for advanced. The park also has trails for snowboarding, cross country skiing and tubing.
